Leonard Bernstein (Lenny for short) The first American born Conductor to lead a major American Symphony Orchestra, composer, pianist, music educator, author, a proud teacher & humanitarian. He was a UNIVERSAL GENIUS, a MUSICAL DEPARTMENT STORE & a musical polymath who excelled in all musical endeavours. An excellent composer without a perfect pitch. Graduated with a degree in music theory from Harvard University in 1939. And spent an year fine-tuning his technical skills at curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. Originally born Louis Bernstein at the insistence of his grandmother, but his parents& friends called him Leonard ("Lenny" for short). After his grandmother passed away in 1934, he legally changed his name to Leonard.
Leonard was married to Felicia Montealegre (Feb.6, 1922 to June 16, 1978) who was an actor & social activist.
Leonardo & Felicia had three children: Jamie, Alexander and Nina
He made his first debut as a performer-composer on disc with his Clarinet Sonata in 1943 & won critical acclaim as a composer for his ballet fancy Free, the filmed musical On the town in 1944 as well as his two symphonies Jeremial & The age of Anxiety.
Retirement & Death He announced his retirement from conducting on October 09, 1990 i.e. 5 days prior to his death on October 14, 1990 in his apartment in Dakota, New York, US, due to heart attack caused by lung failure at the age of 72.
